EchoNet

A network that listens.

EchoNet is a passive acoustic network for counter-drone defence. Its nodes listen for rotor sound, including from drones flying without a radio link, and show the person on watch where on the ground a drone is being heard.

After dark, a day camera loses its view. EchoNet keeps listening for rotors.

The node

Ears in the grass.

A node sits out on open ground and listens.

It is built in layers and sealed as one.

Its ears face every way, all around and overhead.

Below them, the rest of the node sits in a sealed core.

A drone’s sound reaches each ear a moment apart.

Those moments point back along the path the sound travelled. One node, one direction.

Out across the ground, nodes hear the drone in turn and pass the word to their neighbours. Many nodes, one picture.

From sound to alert.

  1. 01HearA node picks the hum of a rotor out of everything else it hears.
  2. 02PointTiny delays across its microphones give the direction the sound came from.
  3. 03CompareReports from nodes across the ground show how the sound moved between them.
  4. 04FollowThe person on watch can follow those reports as the sound moves.
  5. 05ShowEach alert keeps the node reports that led to it.

Built to spread wide.

  • DistributedSmall nodes can be placed across the ground you hold. Each reports what it hears.
  • PassiveA node finds drones by listening alone. It sends nothing out to look.
  • Night and fogA day camera needs light. EchoNet listens for rotor sound without a clear view.
  • Low-costSmall nodes can be added where another listening point is needed.

Into EchoCore AI.

EchoNet’s reports go into EchoCore AI alongside radar, radio and cameras. The person on watch can see what raised an alert.
